Lifecycle of an Investment: The Catalyst Is the Key

We are classic value investors. We’ve found over the course of our careers that companies representing great values are not always initially exciting—one reason they may be overlooked by other investors. These companies may have good franchises, strong balance sheets and attractive dividend yields. They may have reached a plateau or a period of stagnation, but are in the earliest stages of a positive transformation, driven by a catalyst, such as a change in management, a new product or a potential acquisition. These catalysts can help unlock a company’s value; and identifying them before their value becomes apparent to the market is the key to our investment process.

Catalysts, in the form of broad market and/or company-specific events, often lead to accelerating earnings growth and a positive change in investor perception.

The S&P 500 Index® As An Emoticon: Tracking Investing Performance

To determine if you are on track for reaching your financial goals, it is important to monitor investment results. Doing so by simply comparing performance with a stock market index, however, may provide only some of the perspective you need. While indexes are an essential instrument for the industry to measure performance of an asset class, they may not represent an ideal tool, in isolation, to measure progress toward your investment goals.
