Europe is accelerating on 5G network investments following COVID-19 crisis as they play catch up in the 5G race. France, for example, which has been conservative in rolling out 5G network, will start an auction for 5G spectrum in September and target to have 5G commercial launch by the end of 2020. The auction was originally scheduled in April 2020, but it has been delayed owing to the impact from COVID-19. The Dutch government has also kicked off 5G spectrum auction to meet the growing demand of data. Meanwhile, Switzerland and Germany remain ahead with Deutsche Telekom planning to expand 5G coverage to 50% of the German population (vs current 20%) over the next few months and Telefonica Deutsche planning to roll out 5G network in major German cities by 4Q 2020.
